Hormones play a role in our everyday life. Hormone response is as unique to each person as their own fingerprints. Optimization of the sex hormones can help with many different conditions. The goal for healthy aging is to help create a hormonal balance that is right for you. Replacing the hormones that we lose during the aging process is necessary for both men and women. Men very often need testosterone as they age. Some studies have shown more than 38% of men over the age of 45 are low in testosterone and may have some related symptoms due to this testosterone loss. Men often understand that the loss of testosterone is what can lead to fatigue, weight loss issues and low libido. Though, women lose testosterone as they age as well. Typically women start losing testosterone between the ages of 18-30. They can suffer the same symptoms as men but need a much lower amount than men to replenish their diminished supply.

Low levels in both sexes associated with reduced bone density, libido, lean muscle mass. Low levels in men associated with increased CV risk. One of the big myths is that only men need testosterone. Frequently, women need testosterone too. The same signs that are seen in men are also seen in women. The dose of testosterone is nearly 10% of that of men but still needed. Having your testosterone checked as part of any yearly exam is always recommended. Typically a good sign for wondering if testosterone may be low is feeling fatigued and drained in the 3PM to 5PM time frame.

Women are in need of estrogen and progesterone as well as testosterone. Sometimes, progesterone can be used as a sleep aid in men but it is not a hormone men need. This hormone plays a large role in the menstrual cycle for women. It does quite a bit in the body and is needed sometimes before menopause even happens. Progesterone can aid in pregnancy in women who have fertility issues. It is also sometimes used in men as a sleep aid. On the other hand, synthetic progesterone, called progestins, do not reproduce the same actions of natural progesterone. Some adverse effects of progestins are increased appetite, weight gain, fluid retention, irritability, depression, headaches, decreases energy, bloating, breast tenderness, decreases sexual interest, acne, hair loss, nausea, insomnia, interferes with the body’s own production of progesterone, and remains in the body longer.
